Summer time is here! The boat ramps are backed up, it’s bumper-to-bumper going out to Tybee, the line for Pub Subs is all the way to the produce section, and there’s an ambient smell of sunscreen wafting throughout the islands…
But wait, with all this excitement, have you remembered to take care of your eyes when the sunshine hits?
Rays from the sun can cause more than just an unpleasant day of squinting out on the boat or at the beach. Ultra-violet rays from the sun can cause physical damage to the eyes, if left unprotected. Just like UV rays can cause cancer on the skin, the eye surface and eyelids are no exception! Additionally, prolonged, unprotected exposure of the eye to the sun can cause cataracts, which is the clouding of the lens inside the eye. Cataracts can cause blurry, reduced vision, even with the best prescription glasses.
Luckily, most sunglasses these days block 99-100% of UVA and UVB light. Not only do they look cool… but they protect your eyes as well. Win, win.
So the next time you pack up the car to go to Tybee, don’t forget those shades. Even for the kids!
